A car bomb explosion outside government offices in Benghazi on Wednesday caused heavy damage, the Libyan independent Solidarity Press Agency reported, citing a security source, dpa reported.

The explosion hit the buildings of the Foreign Ministry and the Central Bank, added the source. No casualties were reported.

The bombing coincided with the first anniversary of the attack on a US outpost in the eastern Libyan city, which killed the US ambassador to the country and three other Americans.

Libya's new leaders have been struggling to assert their authority and re-establish security in the North African country since dictator Moamer Gaddafi was overthrown and killed in October 2011.
