The world body that oversees the scrapping of nerve-gas weapons confirmed Friday that it was to hold an executive council meeting starting at 10 pm (2200 GMT) in The Hague on a joint Russian-US plan to verify and destroy Syria's chemical weapons, dpa reported.

The UN Security Council in New York is waiting on word from the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW).

A draft resolution presented Thursday in the Security Council would apply punitive measures to any parties in the Syrian civil war that use or fail to eliminate prohibited chemical weapons.

The draft has been agreed by the United States, Russia, China, France and Britain - the five veto-wielding permanent council members - which handed it over to the 10 elected members.

British ambassador Mark Lyall Grant said the resolution might even be passed late Friday in New York, provided the OPCW completed a technical decision to verify and destroy Syria's chemical weapons and Security Council members agreed.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and US Secretary of State John Kerry earlier had approved the draft following lengthy negotiations.
