Israeli airstrike wounds five in Gaza City

Five Palestinians were wounded in an Israeli airstrike late Monday on an empty field north-east of Gaza City, witnesses and medics said, dpa reported.

The airstrike came hours after militants from the Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine (DFLP) claimed responsibility for firing a homemade rocket at southern Israel. No damage or casualties were reported.

Witnesses said that the huge explosion wrecked the neighborhood of al-Tufah, north-east of Gaza City. Ambulances and firefighters rushed to the site of the bombing.

Paramedics said that five Palestinians were transported to Gaza City's Shifa Hospital, were two were being treated for moderate injuries. The targeted field is a known gathering place for Hamas militants.

Israeli-Palestinian violence has flared recently in the Hamas- ruled Gaza Strip, where militant Islamists and left-wing groups have fired several homemade rockets at southern Israel.

Israeli F-16s launched a series of strikes over the last three days on several targets mainly in the southern Gaza Strip, with at least 15 people reported wounded in the air raids.
