Israel overnight evacuated a protest tent camp set up by Palestinians during US President Barack Obama's visit to Israel and the West Bank, dpa reports.

Some 200 policemen broke up several tents and forcibly removed about 40 activists, who set up camp in the controversial E1 area between East Jerusalem and the Jewish settlement of Ma'aleh Adumim.

The protesters were taken to the Qalandia military checkpoint north of Jerusalem into Palestinian-controlled territory, Israel police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said.

Three people were arrested, he said.

Several hundred Palestinian and international activists had set up the outpost Wednesday, shortly before Obama's visit to highlight the opposition to Jewish settlement expansion in the occupied West Bank.

It was the third time they had built the camp in the same area, as part of a new protest strategy of setting up Palestinian outposts in areas where Israel announces construction.
