Israel: Egypt must solve Gaza border problem

Israel Materials 23 January 2008 15:56 (UTC +04:00)

( dpa ) - Israel said Wednesday that it was up to Egypt to "solve the problem" of the breached border between the Gaza Strip and Egypt.

Gazan militants breached the border in dozens of places before dawn Wednesday, prompting tens of thousands of Palestinians to pour into Egypt and head for the town of al-Arish, some 50 kilometres from the border, to stock up with food, fuel and other supplies lacking in the Strip because of an Israeli siege.

"It is the responsibility of Egypt to ensure that the border operates properly, according to signed agreements," an Israeli foreign ministry statement said.

An Egyptian security official said guards did not open fire when the border was holed in order to avoid bloodshed.

At least 60 people were injured in clashes on the border Tuesday between Egyptian security forces and thousands of Gazans.

Israel tightened its siege of Gaza last week, in response to an upsurge in the number rocket attacks from the Gaza Strip.
