Israel strikes Gaza targets after rocket attack

Israeli aircraft attacked targets in the Gaza Strip overnight, in response to rocket attacks launched form the salient on southern Israel, the Israeli military said Sunday, dpa reported.

It was the second Israeli strike against Gaza in two days and came hours after a rocket from the salient damaged a building near the Israeli town of Sderot, which is adjacent to the Strip.

According to a statement from the Israeli Defence Force, the strike targeted a "Hamas-linked terror tunnel and a weapons-smuggling tunnel in the southern Gaza Strip. "

There were no reports of Palestinian casualties.

One Palestinian was killed, and 11 wounded, in an Israeli airstrike on Friday, which came after militants in Gaza fired a Katyusha rocket at the Israeli city of Ashkelon, which lies about 14 kilometres north of the Gaza Strip.

The rocket caused damage but no injuries, although some people were treated for shock.

The Palestinian fatality from the Friday night attack was named as Issa Abdul-Hadi Al-Batran, a senior leader of the Hamas armed wing.
