Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu arrived at the White House Friday for what could be a tense meeting with US President Barack Obama, dpa reported.
The two leaders have already been at odds over how to proceed with the peace process, but those differences sharpened after Obama on Thursday called for a Palestinian state based on the borders that existed before the 1967 Six-Day War.
Netanyahu quickly released a statement criticizing the remarks and saying such an arrangement would leave Israel's borders "indefensible."
Obama was reiterating long-standing US policies, but rarely has an American president addressed the issues of final borders so directly in public.
"We believe the borders of Israel and Palestine should be based on the 1967 lines, with mutually agreed swaps so that secure and recognized borders are established for both states," Obama said in a major address outlining US policy in the Middle East.
Obama and Netanyahu were to deliver statements to the press after the meeting, but were not expected to take questions.
