Two Israeli police found guilty of allowing Palestinian's death

A Jerusalem district court on Monday convicted two policemen of causing death though negligence, after they were found to have dumped an injured Palestinian car thief by the side of a road without leaving him any food or water, dpa reported.

According to Israel Radio, in June 2008 the Palestinian had stolen a car, but been injured in a traffic accident. After he was discharged from hospital, he was to be transferred to the Palestinian territories.

But the two policemen left him by the side of the road near Jerusalem, without ensuring he had food or water. He was unable to walk and died after several days.

"Anyone with eyes in his head, or mercy in his heart, would not have behaved so," the radio quoted the court as saying of the two policemen.

Sentencing will be handed down at a later date.
