Former Israeli military chief of staff Amnon Lipkin-Shahak has died, the hospital treating him said Wednesday, dpa reported.

Shahak died aged 68 after a long battle with leukemia.

He served as chief of staff between 1995 and 1998, during the early years of the Oslo peace process and before the second Palestinian uprising against Israel's occupation of the West Bank and Gaza erupted in late 2000.

The former lieutenant-general took part in contacts with the Palestinians and Syrians and even met his Syrian counterpart.

Most of his tenure as chief of staff was under Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who served a first term as premier from 1996 to 1999.
