(Israelinsider) President Shimon Peres said Wednesday that Israel had once come close to securing the release of convicted Pentagon spy Jonathan Pollard, but American officials canceled the deal just before it was finalized, the Jerusalem Post reported.

Peres said that Israel was doing everything in its power to free Pollard from the US federal prison where he is serving a life sentence for selling Israel military secrets during his stint as a US Navy civilian intelligence analyst.

Peres also said the US was being "surprisingly stubborn."
