(dpa) - Malaysian Election Commission chairman Abdul Rashid Abdul Rahman on Thursday announced March 8 to be the date of polling for the 12th general election and February 24 for nominations of candidates.

Abdul Rashid made the announcement, one day after Wednesday's dissolution of Parliament, at a media conference at the Election Commission's head office in the administrative capital of Putrajaya.

He added that the election would involve 222 parliamentary and 505 state seats in 12 states except for the eastern state of Sarawak, which held its state election in 2006.
