Israel's decision to resume construction of 750 housing units in the West Bank violates the "road map" for peace in the Middle East and international law, UN Secretary General Ban Ki- moon said Monday. ( dpa )
"Any settlement expansion is contrary to Israel's obligations under the road map and to international law," Ban said in a statement.
The so-called road map was worked out by the Middle East diplomatic quartet composed of the United Nations, the European Union, Russia and the United States. It calls for steps to reduce tensions between Israel and the Palestinian Authority and for the establishment of a Palestinian state living next to Israel in peace.
Ban urged Israel to halt the expansion of the Givat Zeev settlement in the West Bank and restate its obligations to the road map.
