( dpa )- Two children and two women were accidently killed by coalition troops returning fire against insurgents in southern Afghanistan, the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) said Tuesday.
The soldiers were attacked by insurgents on Monday and immediately returned fire, but a group of 10 civilians was "tragically" caught in the crossfire, killing the women and children, a statement said.
Several rebels were also killed. No ISAF soldiers were injured, and the incident was under investigation.
No information was provided about the nationality of the soldiers or the exact location of the engagement. British, Canadian and Dutch troops are active in southern Afghanistan.
