The firefight erupted when Marines encountered armed men believed to be Muslim Abu Sayyaf rebels while on patrol in Patikul town on Jolo island, 1,000 kilometres south of Manila, on Friday.

Major General Benjamin Dolorfino, Marine commandant, said troops recovered the body of the slain suspect after the clash.

The soldiers did not suffer any casualties and pursuit operations were ongoing, he said.

The Abu Sayyaf has been linked to the international al-Qaeda terrorist network and is believed to have ties with the regional Jemaah Islamiyah.

The Islamic militant group has been blamed for some of the worst terrorist attacks and a number of high-profile kidnapping-for-ransom cases in the country.
