( dpa ) - Nine prisoners were killed and 20 injured during a riot between rival gangs at the San Fernando de Apure jail in central Venezuela, according to local media Saturday.
The fighting began Friday with prisoners using guns and knives against each other, according to El Nacional newspaper.
The uprising was brought under control with the help of more than 100 soldiers and police agents.
Venezuela has more than 26,000 inmates in 30 prisons. Last year, 498 prisoners were reported killed and more than 1,000 injured in riots and other violence.
