Richard Kidd, of Gateshead, United Kingdom, was with his British girlfriend when the accident happened on Saturday at Dunsulan Falls in Bataan province, 60 kilometres west of Manila.

The police report said Kidd was swimming alone below the waterfall cascade when he was swept away by a strong current.

His girlfriend, Ailsa Lamble, 25, sought help and Kidd was retrieved from the water. But the British tourist died while on the way to hospital.

The couple was in the Philippines to visit Lamble's father, who works for a yacht design firm in an economic zone in the province.
