Russia's military said it had seized weapons and detained 20 Georgian soldiers in the Black Sea port of Poti, one day after Moscow said it had started to withdraw from Georgia, dpa reported.

"Our soldiers daily disarm groups of soldiers from the former Georgian army operating without orders or specific aim ... Monday, in the region of Poti, 20 such fighters were disarmed," Deputy Chief of Staff Anatoly Nagovitsin told a Moscow press briefing.

Nagovitsyn's statement confirms reports by Georgian government officials that a contingent of Russian peacekeeping forces had set up a post in Poti, closing off access to the port.
