At least 10 people were killed and another 10 are missing after a bus plunged into a river in India's northern state of Jammu and Kashmir on Thursday, a news report said.

More than 20 were injured in the accident when the bus skidded off the road into the Chenab river in the southern Kishtwar district of the mountainous state, the PTI news agency reported.

Seven people died at the scene, one on the way to hospital and two succumbed to their injuries at the hospital, the report said. Three women were among the victims.

About ten persons were believed to have been washed away by strong currents swirling around the submerged bus, police told the news agency.

Road accidents in mountainous regions like Jammu and Kashmir are common and are usually caused by reckless driving, bad roads or the poor state of vehicles, reported dpa.
