One inmate died and 13 people were injured in a clash between guards and gunmen at a prison in upper Egypt on Monday, security officials said, dpa reported.
The sources told Deutsche Presse-Agentur dpa that the attackers entered the Assiut prison disguised as visitors in an attempt to free a group of inmates.
Four of the injured were policemen and the rest were gunmen and prisoners, the source added.
Firing was still going on mid-afternoon, the sources said without giving further details.
