A new constitution promoted by the leftist government of Ecuadorian President Rafael Correa was approved by a large majority in a referendum Sunday, according to exit polls released at the close of voting, dpa reported.

A survey of voters by the firm Cedatos found that 66.4 per cent of respondents favoured the new text, while a poll by the company SP put the "yes" vote at 70 per cent.
