European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso said here on Saturday that the financial crisis must not become an excuse for not dealing with the climate change, reported Xinhua.

"If we do not take effective actions to tackle the climate change, there will be larger threats," Barroso made the remarks at the press conference of the seventh Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) which concluded on Saturday.

He said a comprehensive global agreement will be made on the basis of the Paris consensus and through the Poznan meeting this year and the Copenhagen meeting next year.

The agreement would be in accordance with the principle of shouldering common but different responsibilities.

"I think today's discussion was very beneficial, and on the basis of our discussion, it's possible we could reach such an agreement," he added.
