Bangladesh election authorities on Sunday extended the deadline for submission of nomination papers for the December general election by a week, in apparent response to requests by the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, dpa reported.

The deadline has been extended until November 20.

"Although the submission date has been extended, the election date will be unchanged," Election Commissioner Sohul Hossain told reporters after the meeting, saying that the election commission has made every preparation for December 18 balloting.

The Bangladesh Nationalist Party has been asking the commission to defer the nomination paper submission day by few days to get its party hopefuls ready.

The dates for scrutiny of nomination papers will be changed to November 23 and 24 respectively in line with the latest deadline for submission, the election commission said.

The last day for withdrawal of candidature would be now on November 29.

Bangladesh's Election Commission announced the election schedule on November 2, keeping December 18 as voting day for the parliamentary election, which will end nearly two years of emergency military rule.

The parliamentary election was originally scheduled for January 22, 2007. But it was suspended after the military-backed government of Fakhruddin Ahmed took over earlier in month, following political violence.
