A British soldier died on Thursday in a "shooting incident" in Basra, southern Iraq, announced the British Defense Ministry.
The soldier, from the 1st Battalion, the Princess of Wales' Royal Regiment, died from a gunshot wound at the Contingency Operating Base.
The circumstances of the shooting were still under investigation, the ministry said, but it was understood that nobody else was involved. The victim's family had been informed, it added.
The number of British troops who have died in Iraq since 2003 now stands at 197. There are about 4,000 British soldiers based in Basra Airport, Xinhua reported.
