A heavy earthquake struck the coastal area of northern Peru on Sunday, US geological officials reported.
The US Geological Survey in Washington said the 6.2-magnitude quake struck some 70 kilometres from the city of Piura. The quake's depth was around 35 kilometres, according to dpa.
There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage.
