Some 300 Tibetans living in the United States held a prayer and protest Wednesday outside the United Nations, calling for an end to Chinese rule over their territory.
The group gathered at Ralph Bunch Memorial park across the street from UN headquarters in New York, holding banners denouncing China's crackdown a year ago on protests in Lhassa, capital of Tibet, dpa reported.
Tibetans around the world decided not to celebrate their New Year, which fell this year on Wednesday, February 25, but to instead commemorate the anniversary of last year's Lhassa crackdown. The New York protest was held without incident.
In a leaflet distributed to participants, the Free Tibet group called on the United Nations to assist Tibetans.
"Timely action by the UN in Tibet is anxiously awaited by all the Tibetans in Tibet and in exile, and the supporting citizens of the world who have faith in humanity," the group said.
