Brazilian cruise ship Costa Romantica, with 1,429 passengers and 590 crew on board, was Thursday anchored off the Uruguayan coast, pending repairs after a fire broke out on board, Uruguayan authorities confirmed.

The ship was anchored some seven nautical miles off the resort town of Punta del Este, about 120 kilometres east of Uruguayan capital Montevideo, dpa reported.

A mechanical problem caused a fire to break out in a power generator overnight, but it was quickly brought under control.

Alvaro Guinea, waterways police chief in the province around Punta del Este, told Deutsche Presse-Agentur dpa that the cause of the mechanical glitch remained unknown.

Guinea said everyone aboard was safe. If the problem could not be solved, the passengers would be taken ashore or the ship might be tugged to Montevideo.

The cruise ship left Brazil for Buenos Aires and was to stop briefly in Punta del Este when the problem arose.
