Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva on Sunday assured the public there is no need to panic as no infection case of the A/H1N1 flu virus has been found, Xinhua reported.
The government, which is preparing for a regional health minister meeting, has stocked enough antiviral medicine and taken adequate measures to prevent the disease. But the public should often wash hands and take care of personal hygiene, Abhisit said in a weekly national radio and TV address.
Over the upcoming ASEAN+3 (China, Japan, the Republic of Korea) health ministers meeting on May 7 and 8, the prime minister said that the meeting to be held at Bangkok's Dusit Thani Hotel, will be an opportunity to show the region's integrity to fight against the new disease.
A day earlier, Abhisit expressed his confidence that the meeting will strengthen the region's defense against the new disease.
"ASEAN public health ministers will meet next week and more effective measures are expected to be issued," said Abhisit, admitting that it is rather difficult to contain the disease due to a large number of travelers visiting the country.
Also on Saturday, Public Health Ministry Permanent Secretary Praj Boonyawongvirot said that the number of patients suspected of contracting A/H1N1 flu virus has dropped to two from four as officials from the Disease Control Department prepare to receive 14 Thai students and volunteers scheduled to return to Bangkok from Mexico around 1100 p.m. Sunday (GMT1600).
