A powerful earthquake of 7.1 magnitude struck northeast of an island off Honduras early on Thursday and a tsunami watch was in effect for countries along the Caribbean Sea coast, quake and tsunami agencies said.
There was no immediate report of damage or injuries, Reuters reported.
The quake hit 39 miles northeast of Roatan, an island in the Islas de la Bahia, and had a shallow depth, 6.2 miles.
The tsunami watch was in effect for Honduras, Belize and Guatemala, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said.
There was a possibility of a local tsunami that could affect coasts no more than 62 miles from the epicenter of the earthquake, the center said.
Other countries within and bordering the Caribbean Sea should take note of the warning, the center said.
The quake, which struck at 0824 GMT (4:24 a.m. EDT), was originally reported to have a 7.4 magnitude.
Roatan is a large Caribbean resort island popular for scuba diving, snorkeling and dolphin-watching.
One website boasts the island is surrounded by the world's second largest coral reef. Anthony's Key is a well-known hotel on Roatan.
