3 NATO-led Danish troops killed in Afghanistan

At least three Danish troops have been killed after a roadside bomb exploded near their vehicle in the insurgency-hit southern Afghanistan, Press TV reported.

Danish authorities confirmed the incident which happened in the volatile Helmand province on Wednesday.

Sources told Press TV that the soldiers were airlifted to a field hospital at the British Camp Bastion where they were pronounced dead on arrival.

Danish Defense Minister Soeren Gade said in a TV interview that he was "saddened by this new tragedy."

So far, 25 Danish soldiers have been killed in action in Afghanistan since Denmark deployed troops at the end of 2001. Denmark maintains some 700 troops in the volatile Helmand Province.

NATO figures suggest that insurgency has skyrocketed in southern Afghanistan, where British and Danish troops are battling Taliban insurgents.

Top US Commander, General David Petraeus, says that forces stationed in Afghanistan will face "tough fighting" with Taliban militants even beyond 2009.

The insurgency in Afghanistan continues seven-and-a-half years after the US invaded the country to allegedly destroy Taliban and al-Qaeda, and bring stability to the region.
