Northern Chile shaken by 5.5 magnitude earthquake

An earthquake measuring 5.5 magnitude on the Richter Scale hit the far north of Chile on Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. local time, shaking Arica, Tarapaca and Antofagasta without causing major injuries or material damage, Xinhua reported.
   Its epicenter was 30 kilometers north of Pica, or around 2,000 kilometers north of the capital Santiago, the University of Chile' s Seismology Service reported.
   The government's National Emergency Office said that the quake had a maximum intensity of four degrees on the Mercalli scale in Pica, Pozo Altamonte and Colchane; registered three Mercalli degrees in Iquique, Alto Hospicio, Huara and Camina; and two in Arica, Pisagua, Tocopilla and Calama.
