The Brazilian health authorities announced Monday 16 new deaths of A/H1N1 flu in the country, raising the death toll to 92, Xinhua reported.
According to the authorities, the new deaths occurred in the states of Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina, Rio de Janeiro, Pernambuco and Bahia.
So far, Sao Paulo state has reported 37 deaths of A/H1N1 flu, the highest number in the country, followed by Rio Grande do Sul state with 29 victims.
There are at least nine children and 11 pregnant women among the victims.
Many public schools, daycares and universities in several Brazilian states have decided to extend the winter vacations to prevent further spread of the flu.
Brazil's Health Ministry said Monday that it has signed a deal to purchase 18 million doses of the vaccine against A/H1N1 flu. According to the ministry, one million of those vaccines will arrive in the country this year, and the rest in the first quarter of 2010.
There are now 1,958 confirmed cases of A/H1N1 flu in Brazil, according to the ministry's latest report released on July 31. An update will be coming this Friday.
