The United States is sending a military delegation to Syria for the second time in two months to discuss ways to prevent militants from crossing the border into Iraq, defense officials said on Tuesday, Reuters reported.

State Department spokesman P.J. Crowley said the delegation from U.S. Central Command would follow up on a previous round of talks held in June. The team is expected to arrive as early as Wednesday.

"A significant aspect of the discussions has to do with border security and stemming the flow of fighters into Iraq," a U.S. defense official said on condition of anonymity.

The United States has long accused Damascus of letting insurgents use Syrian territory to cross over into Iraq. Syria rejects accusations that it is meddling in Iraq.
