Romanian bus collision kills 11

At least 11 people have been killed and four seriously injured when a train and a bus collided at a level-crossing in north-east Romania, officials say, BBC reported.

Under-Secretary of State for Health Raed Arafat said the bus appeared to have ignored stop signals at the crossing in the village of Scanteia.

The collision occurred at around noon, not far from Scanteia's station, as the train headed towards the city of Iasi.

All the victims had been on board the bus. The driver was seriously injured.

Florin Hadarean, the head of Regiotrans, the private railway company which owns the train, said it had been travelling at about 80kph (50mph) when the bus drove across the tracks.

Though operational, the crossing had no barriers, Mr Arafat said.

The accident was the latest in a series of about 30 collisions on level-crossings in Romania so far this year that have left 18 people dead, a state railway official said.
