In a gruesome incident, a teenage girl has killed her seven family members in the northern Indian state of Haryana, fearing that her relationship with a boy from her own clan might not be accepted and consequently she would be killed for the family's honor, a senior police official said Sunday, Xinhua reported.
"Nineteen-year-old Sonam brutally murdered all her seven family members last week after they came to know about her relationship with Naveen (the boyfriend). The duo planned the murder fearing that the girl's family would never allow them to get married. The girl poisoned her parents, brother, grandmother and three cousins to death," the official said.
Sonam has confessed to her crime and said that Naveen abetted it during interrogation, he said.
Marriage within the same clan is not permitted in Haryana where a number of killings of boys and girls have taken place in the recent past in order to protect the family honor.
