The United Nations opened on Tuesday a day-long summit to discuss how to respond to the challenges of climate change, Xinhua reported.
With the participation of more than 90 heads of state and government and the representation of all 192 member states, it is by far the largest-ever summit on climate change.
Its objective is to mobilize the political will and generate the momentum needed to reach an ambitious agreement at the UN Climate Conference in Copenhagen in December.
In an opening address, UN chief Ban Ki-moon said "failure to reach broad agreement in Copenhagen would be morally inexcusable, economically short-sighted and politically unwise."
