Alexander Haig, former NATO commander and a top official in three Republican administrations, has been hospitalized for nearly a month and was in critical condition, media reports said early Saturday, dpa reported.
Haig, 85, was admitted to Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland, about an hour's drive from the nation's capital, CNN reported online.
Haig served in the administrations of presidents Richard Nixon, Gerald Ford and Ronald Reagan, and was also supreme allied commander over NATO forces in Europe during the late 1970s. He was White House chief of staff when Nixon resigned over the Watergate scandal, and served as secretary of state under Reagan.
Haig served in the US military in Japan starting in 1947, and later served on General Douglas MacArthur's staff in Japan during the 1950-53 Korean War.
