Lydia Lassila captured gold for Australia in the Olympic women's aerials competition as first round leader Xu Mengtao of China met disaster, dpa reported.

Placed second after the first round, Lassila was almost spotless on her second attempt, a back-lay-full-full, to get gold with a combined total of 214.74 points.

Chinese world champion Li Nina had to settle for silver like in 2006 and China also got bronze from Guo Xinxin. The teenager Xu, meanwhile, faded to sixth place as she failed to stand her second jump.

Lassila, 28, emulated compatriot Alisa Camplin, who won the aerials in 2002, with Australia's second gold at the Vacouver Games.
