A Vietnamese herbal healer who claimed to have the world's longest hair has died, Vietnamese press reported Thursday.

Tran Van Hay, 79, had a thick rope of hair well over 6 metres in length and weighing 10.5 kilograms, the official Vietnam News reported.

Hay said he stopped cutting his hair decades ago after finding he often fell ill after cutting it. He worked as a provider of traditional Vietnamese herbal remedies in the southern province of Kien Giang, DPA reported.

Hay died Tuesday of natural causes, according to the report. His claim to the world's longest locks was never verified by authorities.

The Guinness Book of World Records lists 50-year-old Xie Qiuping of China as the owner of the world's longest hair, at 5.6 metres.
