Nine people were killed in the Philippines Wednesday when a truck carrying cooking gas tanks crashed into a row of eateries and the cylinders exploded, police said, dpa reported.
The truck's driver lost control of the vehicle while trying to overtake a van along a highway in Carmona town in Cavite province, just south of Manila, Senior Superintendent Danilo Maligalig said.
Maligalig, the provincial police director, said the truck smashed into an electrical post and then plowed through the food stalls on the roadside before flipping on its side.
The gas tanks then exploded, razing the eateries, he said.
The victims included two children, aged 2 and 12, who were sons of an owner of one of the eateries, police said.
The accident was the second deadly one in 24 hours along the same highway. On Tuesday, seven people died when a sports utility vehicle rammed into an electrical post in nearby Dasmarinas City.
