Spanish fans still sceptical over World Cup chances

Despite their win over Portugal in the Round of 16, the majority of Spain fans still don't believe the country can win its first ever World Cup.

Spain have never reached the World Cup final. Their best ever performance was in Brazil in 1950, when they finished fourth, DPA reported.

But having won the European Championships two years ago, they came into the tournament as favourites and now have what looks like a straightforward quarter-finals meeting with outsiders Paraguay in Johannesburg on Saturday.

However, only 32.9 per cent of 35,000 fans answering an online poll in Madrid sports daily Marca on Wednesday said they thought Spain would win the final, while 21.3 per cent of readers believed they would reach the final but lose it.

Spanish supporters are nevertheless confident their team can get past Paraguay at Ellis Park, with only 7.9 per cent predicting a quarter-finals exit.

That confidence was shared in other online polls, with 84 per cent of readers of Barcelona paper Mundo Deportivo backing Spain to beat Paraguay.

A similar poll in Madrid daily El Mundo revealed that 69 per cent of readers believe Vicente del Bosque's team will reach the semi- finals.
