Twelve people were killed in a residential building fire in Urumqi, capital of China's far western Xinjiang region, on Monday afternoon, rescuers said, Xinhua reported.
The fire broke out at about 2:28 p.m. at a two-story building behind the People's Procuratorate of Xinshi District and were extinguished at about 3 p.m..
The dead include seven man, four women and one body that was burned so badly that it could not be identified, Xinhua reporters learned at the site.
Another 17 injured have been sent to hospital.
The building's owner has the basement and first floor rented.
