Hamburg police on Monday shut down an extremist mosque in Hamburg, which reached notoriety as a meeting place for several plotters of the September 11 attacks on New York in 2001, dpa reported.
A city spokesman explained that the Arabic cultural organization backing the Taiba Mosque had been banned.
The mosque, previously called Al-Quds Mosque, became known as a meeting point for several of the 9/11 plotters. Hamburg authorities have indications that radical Islamists still meet there.
Around 20 police officers and investigators turned up at the building, near Hamburg's central station, in the early hours of the morning, and drilled open the lock.
"Investigators are searching the mosque for further evidence and, if necessary, will secure computers or similar items," said a Hamburg city spokesman. dpa egi hm dms Author: Helen Maguire
