Three-vehicle collision leaves six dead near Los Angeles

A fierce collision involving three vehicles killed at least six people and injured 12 others, authorities said on Tuesday, Xinhua reported.
The accident took place in Bishop near Los Angeles Monday night when a van carrying athletes from California Baptist University in Riverside was struck by a Ford SUV traveling in the opposite direction, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP).
The SUV burst into flames after the collision, said CHP Officer Dennis Cleland.
The van was one of three university vehicles heading northbound on U.S. Highway 395 about five miles (eight kilometers) south of Bishop, Cleland said.
A second van traveling behind avoided the collision, but a vehicle behind it struck the burning SUV, Cleland said.
Five of the fatalities were inside the SUV, and one was inside the van, according to the CHP.
"There could be more fatalities, but we're trying to sort that out," Cleland said.
