Six killed in landslide at Venezuelan mine

A landslide on the property of an abandoned goldmine in Venezuela has killed at least six people, officials said Tuesday, dpa reported.

Two other people were injured in the accident late Monday at the La Tomi mine in the remote town of El Callao in the state of Bolivar, mining minister Jose Khan said.

The victims were allegedly illegal gold miners.

Around 40 people were illegally working at the 5-square-kilometre mine and had disregarded warnings to leave the unstable ground, Khan said.

The owners of the mine 900 kilometres south-east of Caracas abandoned it five years ago due to poor productivity.
