A militant has been killed in a police operation in Russia's North Caucasus republic of Dagestan, a police spokesman said on Saturday, dpa reported.

The operation took place in the city of Derbent on Friday, the spokesman said. There were no casualties among the police.

Four militants were killed in a separate operation in Dagestan's Sergokalinsky district on Friday.

A suicide car bombing killed at least 17 people and injured over 160 others in Vladikavkaz, the capital of the neighboring republic of North Ossetia.

The bombing is the latest in a series of terrorist attacks that have rocked the troubled North Caucasus in recent weeks, including a suicide attack on a military camp in Dagestan.

Terrorist attacks are common in Russia's North Caucasus republics, including Dagestan and Chechnya, but most target security forces or officials. The Kremlin has vowed to clamp down on militant groups while stepping up efforts to boost the local economies.
