Two people were killed and about 50 injured Wednesday when an earthquake shook southern Serbia, media reports quoted Interior Minister Ivica Dacic as saying, dpa reported.

The quake reached a magnitude of 5.3 on the Richter scale, the US Geological Survey said. It occurred at 0056 GMT at a depth of around 10 kilometres.

Its epicentre was located 2 kilometres north of the town of Kraljevo and about 125 kilometres south of Belgrade, the Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Centre said, putting its strength at 5.4.

Dacic said the injured were being treated in Kraljevo hospital. He added that the quake had caused limited damage.

People ran into the streets in panic in several cities. Several aftershocks followed the quakes, the reports said.
