The quake of tectonic origin struck at 1:08 p.m. and was traced 121 kilometers northeast of Surigao City, Mindanao region and has a depth of 70 kilometers, said Desiderio Cabanlit of PHIVOLCS Davao.
"The quake was too deep to cause any damage," Cabanlit told Xinhua in a text message, adding Intensity III was felt in the northern Mindanao city of Surigao and nearby areas. The shaking was also noticed as far as Davao del Norte province, more than 400 kilometers to the south.
The United States Geological Survey (USGS) in its report pegged the quake at magnitude-5.4 with an epicenter 85 kilometers southeast of Guiuan, in the central Philippine province of Samar.
