Boney M star Bobby Farrell dies in St. Petersburg (UPDATE)

Dutch popstar Bobby Farrell from the band Boney M has died in Russia at the age of 61, his agent said Thursday, DPA reported.

The only male member of the four-member group who was known for his deep voice and energetic dance moves died in a hotel room in St Petersburg, John Seine told the German Press Agency dpa in Amsterdam.

He called the death of Farrell a great shock but did not yet know what the possible cause was.

"We don't know anything yet about the cause, except that Bobby was not feeling well late Wednesday evening," Seine told dpa.

"Beforehand he had performed a successful concert with the band in St. Petersburg, where everything went normally," he said.

Farrell and the Boney M band were scheduled to travel on to Italy after their sty in Russia.

Born on the Dutch Antilles island of Aruba, Roberto Alfonso Farrell along with Boney M was one of the major stars during the disco-music era of the 1970s.

He began his career in the Netherlands as a disc jockey and dancer, and was brought to West Germany by German producer Frank Farian in 1976 who put together the disco group Boney M. The group went on to produce such hits as "Rivers of Babylon," "Daddy Cool," and "Kalimba de Luna," among others.
