At least 30 people have died in a cold spell sweeping across northern India, news reports said Monday, dpa reported.

   Eight of the deaths were reported over the previous 24 hours, the Times of India newspaper reported.

   At least 24 people have died over the past week in a cold snap in Uttar Pradesh state, the report said citing officials in state capital Lucknow.

   Three people died in the state of Jammu and Kashmir Sunday, where the temperatures fell as low as minus 23.6 degrees Celsius.

   In Uttar Pradesh, five people died in the previous 24 hours, including a 70-year-old man and a 2-year-old boy, the report said.

   Delhi saw temperatures dipping to six degrees below the normal for the season, according to the Indian Meteorological Department.

   The department said cold weather was likely to continue until Saturday in most parts of Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, north Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh.
