EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton called for calm in Lebanon as protestors took to the streets voicing opposition to Najib Mikati's appointment to prime minister, dpa reported.
"I am concerned about the violent protests which have erupted and call on all parties to show restraint. All parties should cooperate in a spirit of dialogue," Ashton said in a statement.
The protestors were supporters of Saad Hariri, who lost the post after Hezbollah withdrew from his unity government earlier this month. Hezbollah backed Mikati's candidacy.
